Sister Hellen Lamunu

As director of Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu Center for Vulnerable Children, Sister Hellen’s work is the reason we exist. Her efforts to bring stability and education into the lives of the vulnerable children of northern Uganda, and her request for help to support her students as they move on to the secondary level of education are what inspired us to create Educate for Change. “Laura Anderson and Kristine, God made both of you to come at the right time when there was great need at Mother Teresa Orphanage and primary school. Without you my children would have gone back to street life. Thank you for restoring their lives again they are risen again.”

“Change does not happen because we wish it, or pray for it, or donate a room full of computers to a school with no electricity. Change happens because we set an example, we educate, and we work within the cultural norms to make a personal connection with other human beings on the planet in the hope that we can learn from each other. Uganda is truly one of  the most beautiful places on earth I am constantly struck by the celebration of life that takes place in what might appear to be the simplest of cultures. Africa is a continent of developing nations, struggling to find their way in a world rich in technology and abundance, but the people of Uganda, and more specifically the Acholi people of northern Uganda could teach the first world cultures many lessons in compassion, generosity, simplicity, and sincerity.”

“Each day is an opportunity for me to step it up… to ask for the Grace to love more.

That is what I do here in Gulu. I love and support and hug. I encourage and empower and educate. Some days are difficult, but it’s stuff that matters. One day I pray that the children I work with (or have worked with in the past) will see the world with bright eyes and pure hearts and love just the same.

That’s how the world changes.”

  3. DEAR Laura Anderson, Kristine Sullivan and Sr.Hellen, may God bless you abundantly for this great initiative you have started. I understand that perhaps it was not easy especially at its birth, and even still at about this time since life is never one sweet song.Notwithstanding, Educate for Change is now flourishing. I feel inspired and humbled by your profound devotion and charism that has seen you commence a big grand development. To say the least: you are an inspiration to the world. May you, thus, always cultivate fertile soil. BEST WISHES and often remember:that a river passes through the rock not because of its strength but rather perseverance…
